Obviously realizing that there is some trouble afoot, Microsoft on Thursday announced price cuts on its most expensive versions of Vista and said those discounts will range from 20 percent to 48 percent. Ironically, those discounts are designed to coincide with the release of Vista Service Pack 1, which according to Microsoft, will usher in a slew of security fixes and improvements that should make the Vista experience much better. I’m still skeptical that Vista will ever truly get off the ground, and it looks like Microsoft is starting to wake up and smell the rotten eggs. Read the rest of this entry »

A recent trademark application filed by Apple has expanded Apple’s reign to, and I quote:

Firstly, a new development in the Middle East internet cable story has come in. Earlier this week, two cables were supposedly cut in the Mediterranean Sea by a boat anchor during a storm. The fact has now been revealed that those two cables were in a restricted area that no boats were allowed into. The cables are only 2 cm thick. It also seems that a third and possibly fourth cable has been cut and Iran had a short outage but is now operating at %40 capacity. Repair of the cables has been delayed so all traffic going through the Middle East and some of India will be significantly slowed.

EDIT: According to this article, a fifth internet cable has been cut.

Windows Vista SP1 has recieved an RTM status, which means that it is slated for a release in mid-March. Although it fixes some driver problems, it reportedly introduces some more, so Microsoft has made it a non-automatic update for those who have known errors. At least Microsoft knows that they have made mistakes. SP1 will increase operating speeds and should fix some other errors, but we’ll have to see once it comes out. Read the rest of this entry »

Garmin has announced the Nuvifone on Wednesday this week. The Nuvifone is a lot like the iPhone, but with cool GPS features. According to Garmin, the Nuvifone will be released in the third quarter of this year.

The Nuvifone will have a 3.5 inch touch screen with three icons: call, search, and view map. With the Nuvifone, you will have access to maps of the U.S. and Europe. But the Nuvifone does more than show you maps. When you use it as a GPS, the Nuvifone will give you audible directions. If you miss a turn, it will create new directions for you. If you touch the screen, the Nuvifone will display your latitude and longitude, nearest street addresses and intersections, and the closest hospitals, gas stations, or police stations. Something strange is going on with iPhone sales. Just by looking at some data, one can easily come to that conclusion. Apple claims that 4 million iPhones have been sold.

AT&T reports that 2 million iPhones have been activated. Well, there is 50% of the sales. Next, there are about 350,000-400,000 iPhones is Europe, which is another 8-10%. Furthermore, 20% of iPhones have been unlocked, that’s another 800,000 iPhones. Now do the math people, that is 800,000 iPhones left over. Financial analysts calculate this figure to be closer to 670,000. What about those iPhones? There are several ways this could happen. Either Apple is lying about the number of iPhones they have sold, more than the reported 20% of iPhones are hacked, or thousands of iPhones are just filling up AT&T’s warehouses. Personally, I bet that more than the reported number of iPhones being hacked. Not everybody is on AT&T, but who wouldn’t want an iPhone?
